Road bikes
Road bikes are intended to be ridden primarily on pavement. This is
in contrast to off-road or mountain bikes. There is, however, more than
one type of road bike available to the consumer.
When we think of road bikes we often think of racing bikes. This is
because road bikes tend to have an upright shape. This makes the bike
more mobile, but harder to ride slowly. The bike also has low or drop
handlebars which require the rider to bend forward more, and reduces
air resistance at high speed.
Road bikes also include touring bikes and utility bikes. Touring bikes
have a sturdier frame than a racing bike and are designed to be ridden
over long distances with weight loaded onto them and can even tow specialized
trailers. Utility road bikes are the most comfortable of all pavement
bicycles and are designed for around-town use.
